When Life Falls Apart: What the Ocean Teaches Us About Trusting the Process
Use Left/Right to seek, Home/End to jump to start or end. Hold shift to jump forward or backward.
Have you ever felt like everything in your life was going backward? Your finances are struggling, a relationship has ended, or an opportunity you counted on has disappeared.
What if your current setback isn't the end of your story, but simply a low-tide season?
In this inspiring 5 min Friday solo episode of Transform Your Mind, life coach Myrna Young shares a powerful lesson inspired by her walks along Florida's beaches and a recent Alaskan cruise: The ocean never worries when the tide goes out because the tide is part of a natural cycle.
Just as the gravitational forces of the moon and sun influence the ocean's tides, our lives experience seasons of abundance, uncertainty, loss, and renewal.
Through personal reflections, spiritual wisdom, and practical mindset strategies, Myrna explores how to stop creating additional suffering through fear and negative self-talk, discover the hidden lessons in difficult seasons, and respond to uncertainty with greater confidence.
In This Episode, You'll Discover
- Why life has seasons of ebb and flow: Understanding the ocean's natural rhythms and what they teach us about accepting change.
- What your low-tide season reveals: How financial struggles, relationship challenges, and rejection can expose limiting beliefs, emotional wounds, and opportunities for growth.
- How fear creates secondary suffering: Why the stories we tell ourselves about setbacks can be more emotionally exhausting than the setbacks themselves.
- How to manage financial uncertainty: Why trusting the process still requires budgeting, working, saving, and making responsible decisions.
- The power of faith and emotional resilience: How to move forward without allowing temporary circumstances to define your future.
Final Thoughts
There will be seasons when your finances feel uncertain, relationships change, opportunities disappear, and the garden you've planted seems bare.
But don't confuse what you cannot see with what does not exist.
A difficult season doesn't have to become your permanent identity.
The tide went out. The ocean didn't disappear.
If this message encouraged you, share it with someone who may be navigating a low-tide season of their own.
And remember: Keep transforming your mind so you can transform your life.

Welcome back to the Transform Your Mind to Transform Your Life the podcast. This is Life Coach Renna Young, and you're listening to Five Minute Fridays with Coach Mirna. Today I want to talk to you on the topic The Tides of Life, Lessons from the Ocean. Now, I live in Florida, and for a brief period in time, I would walk the beach every morning and meditate and uh, you know, do my exercises. And one of the beautiful things that I love is just listening to the ocean, how it comes in and the how the waves come in and go out. But there are certain times when I am walking the beach where the tide has gone out and you can walk way out. And you know, uh, not um uh without if the tides were in, you would be like drowning. Okay. So, and I just recently came back from a Alaskan cruise, and one of the the stops that we made was at a beach, and the guy was talking about this particular beach, how the tides come in every six hours and goes out every six hours. So, this is basically what inspired this conversation because you know, when the tides go out, the ocean is not worried about whether it's gonna come back in. And a lot of times what happens in our lives is that life is cyclical, and when we're in a downturn or when things have gone out and we're short, then we we tend to worry. So, this is basically what the foundation for this talk is, and I just want to give you the lessons that we can learn from the ocean. All right, so let's first look at the science behind the tide. The ocean tides are primarily driven by the gravitational forces of the moon. Now, I knew that for a long time because they always talk about how a woman's cycle always works with the moon and the tides and all that. Now, I didn't get into the science of it, but I knew that at a high level. What I didn't know is until recently, that is, is that it works with the moon and the sun, right? So the moon's gravity pulls the earth's ocean, creating a bulge of water on the side of the earth facing the moon. Then another tidal deficit comes from the opposite side, related to dynamics of the earth moon system. As the earth rotates through these bulges, a deficit, many coastlines experience alternating periods of high and low tide. Now, this is where the sun comes in. The sun also exerts a gravitational pull on the earth's oceans as well. While the sun, moon, and the earth line up around the new moon and the full moon, their effects reinforce one another, producing larger tidal ranges called spring tides. Now, when the sun and moon are roughly at the right angles relative to the earth, their effects partially counteract each other, producing smaller tidal ranges called neat tides. And here's where the science becomes a lesson for life. The water hasn't disappeared simply because the tide has gone out. The ocean is responding to the forces that aren't visible to the naked eye. So if you're standing on the shore and uh you know you see the tide go out, you might be worried that it's not going to come back in, but the ocean is not. And isn't life sometimes like that? We look at what's happening in front of us and assume that's the whole story. The money decreased, you're in a business and you haven't had any contracts for a while, you start to get worried. Um, you know, your tide has gone out, right? But if you keep doing the same things that you've been doing when the tide was in, it will come back again. You don't panic, close up shop, and say the business is over. No, you you stay in fate. That is cyclical. Whatever goes up must come down, right? So we see the low tide, the water has receded, but we cannot see the forces moving our lives. It would be beneficial if we adopt the attitude of the ocean and know that life is about ebb and flow. The pain of loss we feel today will be replaced by the joy of tomorrow. I promise joy does really come in the morning. Sometimes the morning doesn't come every day, but it comes, all right? Because we cannot see what's happening in the spiritual realm, our minds fills the blank with fear. I am losing everything, things aren't working, I'm going backwards, whatever he never comes back. But the ocean teaches us something different. Movement is not always lost. Sometimes something has to recede before something else can be revealed. Sometimes God has to remove that relationship that's not working to make room for someone else to come in. What the low tide reveals. If you're an ocean person and you've gone to the beach several times, you will know that there are treasures that the ocean brings in. And when the tides go out, you can find them, right? So one of the things the tide, when it recedes, it exposes the shoreline that was underwater before. So, like you can walk out sometimes for a mile, right? And in joy, rocks appear, shells appear, things that were hidden become visible. Your low seasons reveal things too. When money gets tight, you discover your beliefs about scarcity and your fears about not having enough. Or it could reveal your trust in God to make a way out of no way. Yes, us Christians love that verse, right? But you can't just say it, you've got to put it into practice. When a relationship becomes difficult, you may discover an old abandonment wound. We talk a lot about trauma, childhood trauma on this show. But yeah, what happens when someone leaves? Do you think that, oh my gosh, I'm never gonna find another relationship? You know, um, that old wound that you thought that you had covered up is revealed. And now is the time to get therapy. Now is the time to get counseling. Now is the time to fix that because it will keep repeating itself until you get rid of the wound. When someone criticizes you, you may discover how much your worth, how much of your worth you're putting on other people's approval. And that's important. You can't just walk around waiting for other people to pat you on the back. You should be self-confident enough to know when you're doing something right and when you're not, right? Don't go around waiting for approval. So, also, when life doesn't happen according to your timetable or when your tide goes out, you may discover how uncomfortable you are with uncertainty. Yes, we want certainty, which is why entrepreneurship is not for everyone, right? You want the certainty of a paycheck, right? So when you're an entrepreneur, like I said, some months you get contracts, some months you get business, some months you have cash flow, and some months you don't. But what happens when you don't? What happens when the tide goes out for you? Do you worry? Do you think that you're gonna go bankrupt? It's all in the mindset. And the mindset drives what happens next. Because if you live in fear, whatever you fear is that's what you're gonna attract, right? So, mindset, another thing we talk a lot about on this show. So instead of asking, why is this period of adjustment happening to me? Try asking, what is this low tide season revealing to me? What did I need to know? That question transforms the experience. This is how we become the ocean. We accept the low tide because it's already here. We can't wash it away. One of my favorite meditations is that, you know, um, from the monk Tik Nan Han, and he says, It's already here. Whatever you're worried about, it's already here, right? If you're broke, it's already here. If you're rich, it's already here. If the man is left, it's already here. So, what do you do when it's already here, right? You can't wish it away to become the ocean. And you know, not hope, you know that your tide will come back in. We make adjustments to our spending if the low tide is financial. We learn to be alone without being lonely if the low tide is a loss of a relationship. We believe that the tide will come back in. We will have abundance in love and life. Yes, that is a promise, right? That is a declaration. We take what happened: the disappointment, the rejection, the fear, the anger, resentment, even trauma, and we ask, what can I do with this now? And let's talk about the financial for a minute. Money has tights too. Money comes in and money goes out. That actually is the energy of money. We earn it, we spend it, we invest it, we lose it, we receive it, and we give it. The goal isn't to desperately hold on to every dollar because we're afraid there will never be another one. The healthier mindset is to become a good steward of what comes in while developing the skills, beliefs, and actions that allow us to create again when it goes out. You know, there's this show that I was watching at, and I think it's Grant Cardone talked about how um he started off, but you know, I think it was a reality show, and um they give him a hundred dollars and he had to make a million dollars from that. You see, when you know how to make a million dollars, somebody can give you a hundred dollars and you know what to do to turn it into a million dollars. It's the same thing, right? Um, if you when your tights come in, then you know what to do when you're in abundance, when you're in flow, right? When everything is working out, so when it goes back out, those same principles apply. So that's very different from magical thinking. Trusting the tide doesn't mean ignoring reality. You still budget, you still work, you still save, you still make wise decisions, you simply refuse to let fear consume the energy you need to create your next move, right? The tide went out, the ocean didn't disappear. So, whatever season you're in today, don't mistake low tide as permanent. What if we learn to live like the ocean? We we we we don't panic when something leaves, you know, our health changes, an opportunity disappears, someone rejects us, a door closes, a season that once felt abundant suddenly feels empty. And because we're looking only at the shoreline in front of us, we mistake low tide for the end of the ocean. And this is the central idea of this conversation. The really powerful mindset lesson here is that when something recedes, we often create secondary suffering through the story we attach to it. The event may reveal, money is tight, the relationship ended, the opportunity didn't happen, but then the mind adds, nothing ever works out for me. I'm always going backwards, I'm running out of time. I'll never recover from this setback. Now, the original problem is consuming twice as much energy because we're fighting reality while so simultaneously predicting a disastrous future. We've got this crystal ball in front of us, and we are now predicting. And that is what depletes you because that negative energy doesn't allow you to create. All you do is in a slump, right? Resentment consumes energy, comparison consumes energy, worry consumes energy, unforgiveness consumes energy. Constantly rehearsing what went wrong consumes energy. Imagine standing at the beach during low tide screaming, come back, come back. It wouldn't move the water one inch faster. Yet emotionally, that's what we sometimes do. And here's another beautiful dimension to the metaphor: low tide reveals things when the water recedes, part of the shoreline that was once visible becomes visible, right? Rejection can expose our need for validation, conflict can expose unhealed triggers, loneliness can reveal where we're depending on someone else to give us something we haven't learned to give ourselves. Do you know the saying? You first have to become whole, you first have to um have something in order to give it. I'm gonna put out a link to one of the episodes that I have here on the show about becoming whole before two, right? Which means that you have to be a whole person before you can commingle with someone else. Because if then you're not whole, the relationship is not going anywhere because you're gonna be looking at the tides going out all the time and not even appreciating when it comes in because you're not in that mindset space, right? So sometimes you just gotta ask what the low tide is showing you, right? And you stop wasting precious emotional energy panicking about the season you're in. There will be seasons when the tide goes out, there will be seasons when your garden looked bare, there will be moments when you what you planted hasn't broken through the soil yet, right? So don't confuse what you cannot see with what does not exist because we live in a physical and a spiritual realm, and uh what the tides is showing us is the spiritual realm, the moon and the sun and the energy of the earth, right? It not only moves the tides and the ocean, it also moves us because we are 70 water, right? So I hope that you were able to have some aha moments from this talk today about what we can learn from low tide season, because that was the major emphasis. But I also want to leave you it when your tide comes in, when everything is going great, you you have to know you don't it doesn't have to be in the front, but it can be in the back that it will go out, right? Because that's what life is comes in and it goes out, and you've got to be emotionally prepared for it, right? I don't seem sitting around waiting for it, but you need to be emotionally prepared for it. So thank you guys for tuning in to this week's episode of Five Minute Fridays with Coach Myrna. I hope that you're inspired, and if you're in your low season, that you or your low tide season, I should say, that you're inspired to know that all is not lost. Your tide will come back in because that's the law. All right, listen, if you know of someone that can benefit from this message, please share. Comment. I would love to hear your comments. So thanks again for tuning in, and until next time, Namaste.
